Journalism thought leader Wasserman evaluates page-view journalism

You don't get to work for very many Ed Wassermans in your lifetime. Life just ain't that fair. It was my great fortune and privilege to work with Ed in Miami at the Daily Business Review from 1995 to 1997. I've made it a priority to stay in touch with Ed over the years. The column he writes at Washington & Lee is extraordinary. His latest analysis of journalism driven by page views is well worth reading.

Essentially, Ed says, if reader page views are going to determine what gets covered by the "new media," enterprise journalism is doomed. (By the way, uncovering a new pole dancer who slept with Tiger Woods is not enterprise journalism. Just to be clear.)

Here's the link to Ed's piece: http://edwardwasserman.com/2010/03/01/a-big-step-toward-calibrated-journalism

Singer Songwriter by Since June w/ Nathan Walker on guitar

Here's a song, "Singer Songwriter," that we recorded 2/18/10 at Dave's studio. It was recorded live without overdubs as a Pixetell. We used a studio quality mic run through a pre-amp to get this recording. The video was recorded by the webcam in Nathan's computer.

Portland media's invited to a special event at our office!

The Press Institute, an emerging global news organization created to train and employ women journalists in developing nations, will hold a reception on Feb. 24 to introduce its mission to Portland area journalists and writers.

The event will be at the downtown Portland  offices of Ontier Inc., the maker of Pixetell, the emerging rich messaging solution. The address is 326 SW Broadway, Ste. 300, in the old U.S. Bank building in downtown Portland. Here's a link to a personal invitation to the event along with directions to our office: http://pixetell.com/p0014AF7KBNwMP2Z5zpvW2PUZ14AF7K6qeRhMh5zpvW2PUZ141Vhttp://pixetell.com/p0014AF7KBNwMP2Z5zpvW2PUZ14AF7K6qeRhMh5zpvW2PUZ141V

Press Institute founder and executive director Cristi Hegranes will host the evening’s activities. Hegranes is the recent recipient of the Ida B. Wells prize for Bravery in Journalism and a former fellow-in-residence at The Poynter Institute. She launched The Press Institute in 2006 in the Bay Area and selected Portland as the first media center outside the Bay Area for expansion of the Institute’s work.
Hegranes will be joined by Sebastian and Gabrielle Rapport as she opens her outreach initiative in Portland. Sebastian Rapport is the founder and CEO of Ontier. Gabrielle Rapport, a former foundation executive in New York, now works with her husband at Ontier. Co-sponsor of the event with Ontier is The Entrepreneurs Foundation of the Northwest, a Portland nonprofit.

We'll have wine, beer and some yummy snacks for you if you show up. Call Jennifer Ruwart if you have any questions: 415-300-7648.

Faith Healers: Faith in God supercedes concern for child

My friend and fellow journalist Shelly Strom recently posted the following on true/slant:

By Shelly Strom
I attended a riveting and disturbing trial that played out in Oregon City, Ore., throughout the latter part of this month.
Two parents, Jeff and Marci Beagley, are on trial for criminally negligent homicide in the death of their son. If convicted, the Beagleys could face as much as 18 months in jail.

For the Beagleys, keeping their faith appears to be more important than anything else in their lives. It lies at the crux of big decisions—life and death, even. Their church teaches that going to a doctor shows a lack of faith. Some might even go so far as to say they and their co-congregants at Followers of Christ Church are blinded by faith.
That’s OK—until somebody gets hurt, or dies, because of beliefs held by another person. Especially when that someone is a child–as in this case, where the Beagley’s son Neil Beagley died in June 2008.
